Ambika Soni speaks on Media & Entertainment at India Economic Summit
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni while addressing a session on future of media at the ongoing India Economic Summit said, allowing private radio stations to air news bulletins would help in increasing their economic viability.
Ms. Soni said, “We are preparing a cabinet note wherein we plan to allow private radio stations to air news capsules using certain portions of All India Radio news bulletins along with other add-ons. These could be news about local sports events, weather bulletins and even employment news.”
The session titled ‘The Future of Indian Media and Entertainment’ apprised that the Ministry is finalising a note to be floated at the Cabinet that makes testimonial in order to raise the bar of foreign direct investments (FDI) in the FM radio sector to 26% from the current 20%. Presently, the note has been forwarded to the other concerned ministries for their references.
The Ministry is anticipating to make a revenue share model between music royalty owners and FM stations over the controversial issue of royalty.
As for print medium in the Indian nation, Soni said that the amendments suggested by the Ministry in the Press and Registration of Books Act 1867 will alleviate foreign newspapers to enter in theIndian market or induction of an Indian edition.
