BSNL unveils WiMax wireless internet services – The state owned, telecom player BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.) has become the first company in India to unveil wireless internet services i.e. WiMax. WiMax permits for internet services within a 15 KM radius using only one antenna.
Although, as the government considers auctioning WiMax spectrum along with 3G, BSNL plans to use its first mover benefit to roll out WiMax services before everybody else. Rajasthan villagers would be the first, who use this service and many city dwellers have been eagerly waiting for this service. Without any prior consent to rely on telephone or optical fiber cables, WiMax will grant users to get high speed internet services.
This high speed internet service was speculated to get released last year itself, but got postponed as the spectrum required for this service will get auctioned along with 3G spectrum. Though, BSNL has got it before anyone else and is now trashing out Rs. 1200 crore roll out plan.
Priory the service will cost just Rs. 140 for rural subscribers but the price of this service that grants data downloads at high speeds is bound to go up. Once the WiMax auctions get over, BSNL has to pay for the spectrum. In addition, the auctions will allow two more players to enter the fray per circle.
The state-owned telecom player hopes that it may get to raise the much-needed money in its forthcoming IPO to fund the new technologies rather than just filling government coffers that owns the company.
On Sunday, it has been declared by BSNL about the nationwide release of wireless broadband services by using worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) technology starting with Ajmer in Rajasthan. The total cost of the project is approx. Rs 225 crore.
Besides this, this technology will proffer broadband speed of 7Mbps within 15 KM radius mobility in wireless broadband. The company stated via email that, “While we are launching services today, with more than 200 base stations in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, these services in 1,000 block headquarters will be launched across the nation very soon.” It will render high speed wireless broadband connectivity to 11,500 common service centers in several blocks. Through this technology, BSNL has planned to cover the remaining block headquarters for connecting 50,000 common service centers in the next phase.
