Department of Telecommunication (DOT) has instructed the Internet service providers ( ISP’s ) to register all the WIFI users in its network through an online centralized authentication procedure. It’s really a great Idea but while implementing needs lots of infrastructure.
The regulation is aimed to prevent unauthorized WIFI usage. Many Anti Social activities using unsecured WIFI networks to send mails led DOT to implement this new regulation. Subscribers now have to register themselves within period of 60 days on the new system.
DOT raised concerned because WIFI uses unlicensed frequency band and there is no way for ISP’s to check if the user to which it is providing service is using WIFI network or not. Currently it is not possible for the ISP to determine if the user is using WIFI at home or not unless the ISP plugs some new device which is an additional cost to the ISP or the user or to bring such kind of registration before getting the WI-Fi connectivity. It is also advisable to all the users to change their username and password timely so that no one can able to misuse their connection and their WI-FI remain secure but the most common problem encountered is that subscribers tend to continue with the default settings of the modem and do not upgrade username and password on regular basis.
