General Motors India, the wholly-owned subsidiary of American carmaker General Motors Corporation, is in progressive talks with the Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company, world’s leading electric car manufacturing company, known for small eco-friendly cars to roll out electric variants of its small car Chevrolet Spark. General Motors India aims to source the technology from Reva Electric Car Company. The company also intends to have a joint venture to draw out an electric model of Chevrolet Spark for the overseas market.
GM India’s vice-president of corporate affairs, P Balendran, said, they have been following up on the chances for commercial application of alternative fuel options, including bio-diesel, jatropha arrangement with CSMCRI (Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute), electric, fuel cell, hydrogen etc, with many parties for quite some time. He further said that their efforts are ongoing and they do not have much to announce as of now. He said, as soon as they finalize on introducing any alternative fuel solutions, they will announce.
General Motors India and Reva Electric Car Company will enter into a joint venture and is awaiting a green signal from GM’s headquarters in Detroit, Michigan.
Indian market is very significant for General Motors. General Motors has already signaled that it will acquaint the Volt electric vehicle in India in a completely-imported form. The chosen technology of General Motors for future would be e-vehicles. Apart from GM, the queue forms include, Ford and Chrysler as well as Japanese auto majors Toyota, Nissan and Honda.
Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company, declared to unveil two new models of Reva, at the upcoming 63rd Frankfurt International Motor Show on September 16, 2009. The Reva NXR (next revolution) and REVA NXG (next generation).
The Reva NXR (next revolution), is a four-seat, three-door hatchback family car suitable for urban driving. The production for this car will commence at the beginning of 2010. It is ideal for those who commute daily.
REVA NXG (next generation), a sporty two-seater with a targa roof. It is designed by Dilip Chhabria of the internationally renowned automotive design company DC Design. This car will go into production in 2011. Reva’s new models have a unique technology the best part which is an invisible reserve fuel tank. The customer can activate when necessary simply by sending an SMS or making a phone call to a specified number, if they run out of charge. This is known as REVive technology, a unique feature.
With the launch of these cars Reva’s new website will also be launched, Revaglobal.com, where in customers can register on the priority list for the new cars on-line.
