Nielson has revealed an interesting fact through a recent study that facebook came forth as number third video site in the United States. According to Nielsen vice president of Media Analytics Jon Gibs, “Facebook’s rapid growth in online video during the last year illustrates the site’s evolution from simply a communications focused tool to a media portal.”
In Neilson VideoCensus reports Facebook which has secured the third position and chasing after YouTube and Hulu, has jumped up from the number 10 position to number 3rd. Statistics shows that the total time spent viewing video on Facebook” grew by 1,840 percent year over year. The number of unique viewers grew 548 per cent over the same period. Total streams increased by 987 per cent year over year.
” Online video viewing has become central to the web experience. In conjunction with this increase, we are seeing remarkable growth in video viewing on social networking sites and is only natural that these two trends would converge and consumers minds, making sites like Facebook and MySpace.com increasingly important distribution points for both consumer and professionally generated video,” said Jon Gibs, vice president of media analytics for Nielsen.
Face book has generated more than 217 million streams in October resulting in 31.5 million viewers as opposed to 110 million streams with 23 million viewers in September.
Meanwhile, YouTube quite expectedly got the number 1 position with 6,632,964,000 streams and 105,923,000 unique viewers. Hulu viewership stands second ,which had 632,662,000 streams with 13,472,000.
