Government must shun services for cloned IMEI handsets: ICA President
Indian cellular Association has appealed the union government that from November 30th the services for the mobile phones without UID numbers must be banned . The International Mobile Equipment Identification (IMEI) is a 15-digit code that helps to identify a stolen handset and helps the security agencies to track the users.
The Department of Telecom (DOT) already issued a directive of banning all the mobile phones that do not have any legitimate International Mobile Equipment Identify (IMEI) number. President of ICA ,Pankaj Mohindroo has also informed the general public that in grey market there are numbers of handsets available having a cloned IMEI number so beware while purchasing your mobile phone from the market.
The Dot has issued this directive as Proliferation of unbranded phone devices, without IMEI number or with invalid or cloned numbers posed a serious threat to national security as they could not be tracked. The DOT has already directed all the mobile operators not to permit incoming and outgoing calling on to the handset without IMEI number.
President of ICA ,Pankaj Mohindroo has revealed the fact that till date there are no official statistics on the number of handsets without IMEI number but an estimate of around 25 million handsets are in the country are having no IMEI number on it.
ICA President Pankaj Mahindroo told that in order to curb the growing unbranded mobile market, the ICA has undertaken a huge campaign to sensitize the government, mobile phone retailers and customers.
Without IMEI number mobiles are primarily sourced from the neighbourhood country China and are adversely impacting the organized Indian mobile devices market apart from causing huge loss in revenue to the government. The Global Systems for Mobile Communications Association is the only body which assigns the IMEI numbers to the mobile phone manufacturers worldwide.
