IGNOU to use its own server after Yahoo server’s collapse
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is the country’s largest distance education university. The IGNOU Engineering Aptitude Test (IGNEAT) is the university’s first foray into online testing. The test ascertains entry into B. Tech and diploma programmes in engineering and technology.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Tuesday said it will conduct an entrance test for engineering courses again in next 10 days, after its online test system collapsed on Saturday.
IGNOU Vice-Chancellor V. Rajashekharan Pillai commented that they are still trying to determine the reason of server breakdown. “We have roped in the cyber security cell (Delhi Police) to investigate the matter and have asked our technicians for a report which we would get in a week.” He further ruled out the possibility of hacking and said, “I don’t think it is hacking, it was a server failure – and could have been due to load and congestion. We have thought of using our own server.”
The first session of IGNEAT 2009, the first online version of the entrance test was scheduled for 11 am-12.30 pm on October 31. A second 90-minute session was to follow at 3 pm, with three other sessions scheduled for November 1.
Yahoo server was used by IGNOU for conducting the test.
Online exams in five engineering disciplines: civil, mechanical, electrical, computer science & engineering, and electronics & communications engineering — were to be given in seven languages i.e. English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Assamese and Marathi at 80 examination centre across the country.
