Connecting your external hard drive to your PC without using the USB cable will soon happen. Imation has announced its external hard drive that connects by wireless USB to PCs. The Pro WX Wireless USB hard drive works just like any other USB hard drive, with one elision, ‘it doesn’t require a USB cable.’ This technology allows you to connect USB 2.0 devices to a computer wirelessly from up to 30 feet away with an all through speed of up to 480Mbps.

According to Imation, the Pro WX wireless USB external hard drive offers less than that, with speeds of up to only 120Mbps or 15MBps; this is about three times slower than regular USB 2.0 hard drives. At this speed it can finish copying the entire content of a CD-ROM (roughly 800MB) in about 50 seconds.

The Pro WX Wireless USB hard drive comes in a 3.5in form-factor and holds up to 1.5TB of data. Time Capsule uses 802.11n Wi-Fi not Wireless USB. It is a router too and is frequently used as a networked device to share files between several hosts, whereas, the Pro WX is certainly not networked, being used on a one to one basis with its host.

Pro WX comes with Memeo Instant Backup software. The Windows need to rationally disconnect USB-connected external drives before physically disconnecting them is avoided because the Pro WX receiver is plugged into the host’s USB socket and the Pro WX drive itself. When the device comes within the 30ft range of the receiver it is automatically detected and backup starts.

The Imation Pro WX features a sleep-mode feature to conserve energy. The device is compatible with both PC and Mac operating systems. As most computers don’t have built-in wireless USB, there are adapters that can be added to the machine.
