KERC Raises Power Tariff by 34.16 paisa/unit – KERC (Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission) has raised its power tariff in the state by approx. 34.16 paisa/unit. As compared to hike of 51 paisa done by Escoms (Electricity Supply Companies), this raise in power tariff works out to be a hike of about 7.5%.

From December 1, this raise in power tariff will come into effect. For the first time, each and every 5 electricity supplying companies in the state will have a bit different tariffs rather than the present system of uniform tariff as Karnataka Electricity regulatory Commission has bring out a differential tariff order.

The increase in power tariff deviates for each section of consumers. Including Bangalore, power consumers in BESCOM (Better customer care) area will have to give extra raise varying from 24.87 to 26.57 paisa/unit.

There is good news for all the domestic consumers in every Escoms that there will be no raise in power tariff for the first 100 units consumed by them. For the consumption between 101 to 200 units, they have to pay extra 30 paisa/unit, consumption between 300 to 400 units, they have to pay extra 50 paisa/unit and above 400 units, they have to pay extra 120 paisa/unit.

The raise in power tariff as per the consumption has been done with a double intention, first to assure that poor and middle class will not get affected and second to deter general usage of power by upper middle class and rich segments. KERC has started distinguishing consumers in 3 categories of those in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, urban local bodies and village panchayat areas.

The hike for consumers in VPs and ULBs are lesser than those belonging to BBMP area. In addition,
Bhagya Jyothi/Lutir Jyothi consumers and irrigation pump sets consumers have been left from this hike. In a similar manner, the power tariff has been raised by 15 to 55 paisa/unit for LT (Low Tension) commercial categories in BBMP.

For the first 500 units, tariff for LT industries has not been changed, whereas for consumption between 501 to 1000 units, they have to pay extra 35 paisa/unit and for consumption above 1000 units, they have to pay 30 paisa/unit. For temporary supply, there is a steep rise of 75 paisa to 1 rupee/unit.

For HT industries, for the consumption up to 1 lakh KWH, the tariff has been raised by 50 paisa/unit whereas for the consumption beyond 1 lakh KWHs, they have to pay extra 30 paisa/unit. Besides this, HT residential apartments have to pay 70 paisa extra per unit and HT commercial categories like shopping malls have to pay extra 75/80 paisa/unit.
