U.S. stocks were falling on Friday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 154 points to 10310, the S&P 500 dropped 19 points to 1091 and the Nasdaq Composite slid 38 points to 2138.
Stocks tumbled Friday afternoon as fears about the fallout from Dubai’s debt problems rattled Wall Street in a thinly-traded half-day session following Thanksgiving.
Retailers were down on Black Friday, as early signs showed that big discounted items were being bought by eager shoppers, but traffic was muted and higher-margin sales remained timid. Macy’s Inc. (NYSE:M, $16.97, -$0.59, -3.36%), J.C. Penney Co. (NYSE:JCP, $29.57, -$1.07, -3.49%) and Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE:KSS, $54.45, -$1.09, -1.96%) were among the weaker department stores. Electronics retailer RadioShack Corp. (NYSE:RSH, $18.38, -$0.51, -2.70%) remained low, though Best Buy Co. (NYSE:BBY, $42.83, -$0.43, -0.99%) wasn’t as hard hit. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT, $54.63, -$0.33, -0.60%), Sears Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:SHLD, $71.94, -$0.52, -0.72%) and Target Corp. (NYSE:TGT, $47.70, -$0.13, -0.27%) were also in the red, though doing slightly better than others.
