Microsoft Translation Tool which cuts off Language Barrier – Microsoft Corporation would soon launch its translation tools that cut off all language barriers. It would make computers accessible for those individuals who don’t know English. These translation tools will be designed mainly for six languages i.e. Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

The translation tools grant the users to key in the language words in phonetic way by using the English script and retrieve the text in their respective languages. The company sensed that due to lack of English language skills, people are keeping themselves away from computers.

According to Managing Director at MSIDC (Microsoft India Development Center) and corporate Vice-President Mr. Srini Koppolu, “As compared to 45 crore mobile phones in the country, only 1.2 crore households have PCs at their home”. By the next few weeks, beta version of these translation tools will be available for free downloads from Microsoft’s web site.

The company intends that these translation tools will raise the base of users and will be helpful for them. Certain modifications have also been done in the transliteration services offered by the company. The main positive point of these tools is that the users could send emails and chat in their mother language.

The group programme head and manager of EM labs Mr. Thirumalai Anandanpillai said, “They select the language option from the desktop option and key in the mails or chat messages in their mail or chat boxes”. Even without downloading the tools, the user can see the content in the said languages. By using appropriate converters, the transliterated text i.e. in Unicode form could be altered in other fonts.

In addition, the company spokesperson stated, “We have built a platform. And basing on this, it is very easy to develop other language tools. We will roll out the tools for other Indian languages in phases”. Both desktop and web versions would be offered, comprising virtual keyboards, which represents alphabets and derivative words in their respective linguistic order. In respect to Windows 7 in Indian languages, the company would roll out OS in at least 14 languages in next few months.
