MTNL announces per second billing scheme for 2G and 3G customers – The state-run telecom service provider MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. ) has announced per second billing scheme for its 2G and 3G customers especially located in Delhi and Mumbai arenas. According to this plan, calls which are made with in the MTNL network will be charged half paise per second whereas calls made to other networks all across the country will be charged one paise per second.

For one paise per second, MTNL will also render video calls all across its 3G network. SMS rates have also been lowered to 25 paise for local text messages, Rs. 1 for national and Rs. 2.50 for international messages. The managing director and chairman of MTNL Mr. R.S.P. Sinha stated that, “Our pay-per-second plan is the most affordable and shall benefit 4.4 million mobile customers of MTNL, including about 165,000 3G customers.”

This move of launching per second billing scheme has been taken by MTNL after other telecom service providers like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, IDEA and Tata Teleservices. Till now, the CDMA mobile service of Sistema Shyam i.e. MTS has proffered a charge of half paise per second for calls on the same network.

The first company which introduces per second billing scheme is Tata DOCOMO, followed by all other operators. Experts have shown their concern regarding the profitability of telecom players on the back of this rate war that has lowered the prices to a new low. So far, BSNL and MTNL are the two companies, which have offered 3G services on their networks.

The prepaid customer has to pay Rs. 149 and Rs. 45 for availing per second plan in MTNL’s Delhi and Mumbai circles respectively. On the contrary, postpaid customer would be charged Rs. 149 for availing this scheme, along with Rs. 500 as activation fees aside from monthly fixed charges. On accomplishment, R.S.P. Sinha told that the company is always looking forward for new better opportunities and is sharply exploring the African area.
