Nikon, Japanese digi-imaging equipment- maker, has launched the D3S in the Indian market by Hidehiko Tanaka, Managing Director, Nikon India and actor Neil Nitin Mukesh at an event in Mumbai. Nikon, D3S, a 12.1 megapixel image sensor camera is aimed at professionals. Nikon, D3S, ameliorates low light photography, courtesy seven stop ISO range of 200 – 12,800 courtesy 7 stop ISO levels ranging from 200 – 12,800. ISO12, 800 changes ones approach to photography. Nikon, says, when needed, the D3S expands to the ISO equivalent of 102,400.

Nikon India’s Managing Director, Hidehiko Tanaka, told PTI during the launch of its most recent version of D-SLR camera, Nikon D3S, “Last year over 110-million units of SLR cameras were sold globally by different companies. Of this, India’s share was a mere one million, which is very small. We have taken a few measures to increase Nikon’s sales in the country.”
Users can capture movies at 720p/ 24fps in motion JPEG with stereo sound using the input jack, with this camera. ‘Save Selected’ frame option permits the user to shoot video freely. Users can watch movies captured on D3S’s 3-inch, approx. 921k-dot color, 170″ viewing angle LCD monitor. The highly configurable yet easy to setup 51-point Multi-CAM3500 AF system with 15 sensitive cross points deliver faster focus on quick and erratic subject movements. The AF system has also been tuned to proffer auto focus while movie capture or Live View. Users get to choose from its three crop modes i.e. 5:4 (30×24), 1.2x (30×20), and DX (24×16).
There’s also a nifty new Quiet shutter release mode that allows the photographer to extenuate the sound made by the mirror return. Apt for wildlife photography and other situations where shutter noise might distract the subject, this innovation speculates and reacts to pragmatic feedback from photographers using Nikon’s D3 series cameras.
The Active D-Lighting comes with not less than five options while shooting high contrast or high key subject matter. Other attributes include Auto setting along with four manual control levels- Extra High, High, Normal and Low.
The D3S comes with new RAW processing options in its Retouch menu. The image settings are applicable to RAW (NEF) files in the camera on the go- JPEG compression, Size, White Balance, Exposure Compensation, Picture Control, Noise Reduction, Color space and Vignette Control settings.
The D3S uses the EN-EL4a rechargeable batteries that claim to proffer a longer battery life in certain shooting conditions, in which it is able to shoot upto 4,200 images per charge.
The camera will be sold in India at a whopping MRP of Rs. 2,89,950.
Hidehiko Tanaka, Managing Director, Nikon India said, “The company’s share was 37 per cent of the total 12,000 units of D-SLR cameras sold by various companies.”
“This fiscal, the overall sales will be 17,000 D-SLR units. Out of this, Nikon expects a 45 per cent share.” Nikon would appoint 22 distributors by year-end and plans to add 6 more, besides expanding its retail footprint to 1,200 by March 2010, Tanaka said, without disclosing any investment details.
He further mentioned that Nikon would expend 60% of its total apportioned marketing costs towards in-shop branding. Now, the company has around 800 retail points in all major metros and cities.
