U.S. stocks climbed Friday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.05% to 10011, the S&P 500 gained 0.07% to 1067 and the Nasdaq Composite increased 0.13% to 2108.
Rosetta Stone Inc. (NYSE:RST, $18.36, -$2.15, -10.48%) announced third quarter GAAP net income of $5.30 million or $0.25 per share, compared to $6.02 million, or $0.36 per share in the prior year quarter. Total revenue for the quarter was $67.2 million, an increase of 12%, compared to $59.8 million in the prior year period.
Coinstar Inc.’s (NASDAQ:CSTR, $28.45, -$3.42, -10.72%) third-quarter profit surged on the sale of the company’s entertainment-services business, though revenue growth came in under expectations and the maker of automated coin-return machines and RedBox DVD rental boxes revised its guidance to a lower revenue figure to reflect the sale of its entertainment services business.
Eclipsys Corp. (NASDAQ:ECLP, $19.84, +$0.28, 1.43%) reported third-quarter revenue below analysts’ estimates, although earnings per share came in a penny ahead of consensus thanks to cost cutting. While the quarter had problems, analysts liked that the health-care information technology company made bullish comments about bookings.
PriceSmart Inc. (NASDAQ:PSMT, $19.51, -$0.47, -2.35%) reported a smaller-than-expected 9.2% drop in fiscal fourth-quarter profit despite revenue growth falling short of estimates for the operator of U.S.-style warehouse membership outlets in Central America and the Caribbean.
Boston Beer Co. (NYSE:SAM, $41.37, +$3.93, 10.50%), brewer of Sam Adams, remains “positive about the future of craft beer” and its own potential. Chief Executive Martin Roper said volumes picked up in the strong third quarter, which he speculated may have been tied to marketing, new packaging, or maybe people who tried out some new varieties returned in the end. The brewer boosted its earnings-per-share forecast for 2009 and sees revenue per barrel rising 2% in 2010.
Hansen Natural Corp.’s (NASDAQ:HANS, $34.24, -$2.74, -7.40%) third-quarter profit rose 7.8% as the all-natural soda and juice maker again posted strong Monster Energy drink sales but results missed expectations.
Perma-Fix Environmental Services Inc. (NASDAQ:PESI, $2.31, +$0.02, 0.87%) reported its third-quarter results improved more than expected amid a sharp increase for nuclear-waste receipts.
Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE:BSX, $8.11, +$0.06, 0.81%) agreed to pay $296 million to resolve a Justice Department investigation into to product advisories at its Guidant defibrillator unit.
