Sarena and Venus Williams win women’s double title
Serena Williams and Venus Williams won women’s double Australian Open Grand Slam title in Melbourne. Williams sisters win over Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Japan’s Ai Sugiyama with with a 6-3, 6-3.
The victory meant that they captured their third Australian Open title and 8th Grand Slam title overall while playing together. The power packed game of the Americans was cheered by a packed Rod Laver arena.
The Williams sisters now have three Australian Open doubles titles, having previously won here in 2001 and 2003.
Sarena Williams has earned 22,725,475 US dollars, overtaking the now-retired Sorenstam who had held the record for career earnings with a total of 22,573,192 dollars.
Serena Williams will go after the singles championship Saturday when she meets Dinara Safina. It would be Williams’ fourth Australian Open title. Her sister was eliminated in the second round by Carla Suarez Navarro, who made it to the quarterfinals.
