Wipro Tech to Establish Second Campus in West Bengal – IT services giant Wipro Technologies has taken West Bengal’s offer of 50 acres in Rajarhat on the outskirts of the city for establishing its second campus, lending some relief to the ruling Left Front.

The Chairman at Wipro Technologies Mr. Azim Premji with his officials has visited the plot and in addition also held a meeting with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at the state secretariat Writers’ Buildings. Besides this, Azim Premji stated, “We visited the site in the morning and have settled with the government for purchase of the land. We appreciate the support we have received from the state government.”

According to him, the plot has a lot of potential. Also, the belonging to the housing infrastructure development corp. (Hidco) will be passed over to the IT giant for Rs. 1.5 crore per acre. The company said that the work will start in 18 months and the area is getting ready.

State IT Minister Debesh Das told that the payment for Rs. 75 crore plots would be made in two phases; with the first phase payment probably to be executed by the month end. Das said, “The decision of Wipro to go for its second campus in Kolkata even at this time of downturn proves the state’s potential in IT industries.”

State IT Secretary Mr. Siddharth supposed, “With the inclusion of Wipro, the IT hub in the Newtown Rajarhat area now encompasses more than 300 acres of land.” 3 months back, the state government had postpone the suggested township projects at Rajarhat after it invalidated land allotments to IT companies like Wipro and Infosys complying allegations that land had been forcibly taken from locals.

Later, according to the chief minister, the government was ready to proffer 45 acre land each to Wipro and Infosys for beginning new centers. On October 30, Wipro wrote to the government that seeking land at concessional price following which it was proffered 50 acre plot.

While the Tata Motors shifted its small car Nano plant from the state’s Singur to Sanand in Gujarat, the chemical hub to be executed by the Salim Group of Indonesia has also been a non-starter so far.
